The medical sciences are researching the beginnings of the viruses that may have led to the human active HIV viruses. They have proposed that the viruses first became active in the human population by the butchering and consumption of monkey and gorilla meat in Africa and that it may have spread rapidly due to hypodermic needles being inexpensive.
Michael Worobey, a virologist at the University of Arizona and another author contest this postulation and state that the spread may be more endemic due to earlier and more expsensive hypodermic needles from about 1910.
